flowlow Posted July 24, 2012 Share Posted July 24, 2012 Hi all just wondering what other settings do in role play for continuous provision. out of interest in a role play corner do you always have a home corner out? I have been some places where they believe that a home corner should be available all the time, other places where it is changed termly or half termly and sometimes its a home corner sometimes its a post office or a fruit and veg shop! the places that have home corner out all the time say it is part of the continuous provision particularly for the intake every term of new children who may need it for feeling safe etc... but what happens in your settings if your children have an interest in something else do you then have two role plays?? finleysmaid Posted July 24, 2012 Share Posted July 24, 2012 we are lucky with the space available ...so yes we always have the home corner available (but it changes slightly over time to show progression) but we may well have another 'role play area', this also happens outside. Guest Posted July 24, 2012 Share Posted July 24, 2012 We have home corner out though do change inside through observations - we also often have role play outside as well. If we do not have a home corner in our role play, we might add the cooker & sink to near where the playdough is and just observe what happens. We startl of our year with home corner as children will know what to do, if the role play is based on a post office etc children needs lots of adult role modelling before anything comes out of it. garrison Posted July 24, 2012 Share Posted July 24, 2012 We always have the home corner in the 2-3 room as there exposure to other things like a hairdressers or post office will be pretty limited. Guest Posted July 25, 2012 Share Posted July 25, 2012 we are a pack away and in the past had one or the other, either home or shop or office bt this did not meet all our childrens needs so we bought a small movable trolley which hlds 6 boxes and these hold items for home corner, shop and office so all cildren now have choice and we can enhance ares as needed we had the boys with the till credit cards and reciepts buying tickets for the olympic games and some of the younger girls had taken home corner items into the book corner and were playing holidays! this works much better for all now Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

We are pack-away so everything comes out two small cupboards and goes back in every session, but we have done a mixture with the role play. Home corner is where we always start and then in the past we would swap to other ideas, we have changed things every week but found this meant we didn't get the best out of the role play so went to changing once every half term, to actually having so many requests for home corner is stayed out all the time. Then however we would have a group of children that wanted something else so we had fireman role play outside which worked really well but it is sooooo much to get out every session. On top we would also have dressing up with all the different requests for that which actually was normally different to the role play. We felt we were not always hitting the best way to meet all the needs of the children, but also felt that home corner is always really popular so didn't want to do away with it, although sometimes progression was harder to implement with all the requests for things I love the idea Suer of having boxes so that the children can decide what to have out. Do you have a house frame or anything like that that comes out or do you rely on children creating the spaces? Do you find that with the boxes they just take it all out and leave it laying around all over room? What do you have in your boxes out of interest? Guest Posted July 25, 2012 Share Posted July 25, 2012 we have a frame that we bring out that is half covered with a net hanging from the ceiling. in there are cooker sink and washing machine (all from com. playthings, expensive but fits on top of each other, so for tardis like cupboards are perfect) also we have small table and couple of chairs. our trolley came from DandG its great becuase it has a top which means stuff can stack on top of th trolley when packed away the boxes hold all the usual plates cups untencils knives and forks (all real items) table cloth saucepans the shop box has reciepts, cards open and closed signs prices tills and cans of food we add to this as childrens interests are noted or they ask , so we may add real fruit and veg, bring out the baby box etc it does go every where in the setting but that is the whole point of meeting the childrens needs we have photos on the box so tidying up is not too much of a chore. flowlow Posted July 25, 2012 Author Share Posted July 25, 2012 thank you so much Suer for that, given me a lot to think about and can feel a re-shuffle coming on I agree with meeting the children's needs that everything should go every where although we did have on occasion where for a whole week all the mini sorting, food from home corner etc.. would just be gathered and dumped in a big pile in the den we had created and then left there lol when we observed there was of course a little more going on with these children's learning but it did frustrated certain members of my staff (silly OCD hehehehehe ) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
