redjayne
It extends childrens vocabulary by introducing new and different words , it encourages story making and recreating 'real life' scenarios, turn taking and respecting others also requires elements of language skills and knowing whats acceptable. Negotiation with others, also involving language skills, carrying out and taking about sequences in role play are also key aspects. Lots of useful quotes to be found in Jane Drake 'Planning Children's Play and Learning in the FS' and Miller , Cable and Devereux 'Developing Early Years Practice' - and also the quote from Susan Issacs which sums up role play 'Play is the child's means of living and of understanding life' (Issacs 1954:23) Lots of different types of communication in role play - giving instructions, talking about feelings and intentions, recalling whats happened before and predicting the future, answering and asking questions etc... ( Miller et al 2005:118)
