Effective Planning

Hi

 

I just wanted some feedback on my planning which yet again I am evaluating ready for next year and making small changes to improve my practise. This year my planning I have found is too structured, so much so that I have no time to sit with the children in the continuous provision as I was either doing reading, phonics, guided writing or guided reading. I also had a CLL and PSRN input everyday followed by one group guided writing or working in a small group with me whilst the rest access CI. Now this does work but is very fast paced and during playtimes I was finding I had not enough time to prepare for my next carpet time e.g. for psrn.

 

After reading through the forum and looking at how people have been organising their day, I have decided to have only two CLL and PSRN inputs a week maybe on a monday, and Thursday but have phonics still every morning for 15 as I have support at this time. Then in the afternoon have in the week 1 KUW input and 1 creative input. PE, music, swimming and French are also taught by specialist teachers. I have only ten children in my class and I have a teaching assistant for half an hour first thing in the morning every morning to support with the phonics. My timetable is quite rigid because we are an independent school and have the specialist teachers coming in (which I really disagree with) but the time I have I can try my best to suit the EYFS.

 

Can you give me feedback on my thoughts and maybe add suggestions if you think other ways would work better. I would really appreciate it.

I do 1 carpet session each morning which is either PSRN or CLL or sounds similar to what you are proposing to do. I do phonics everyday. My carpet sessions for the other areas are very brief after lunch. I am not going to send my children out to playtime next year as I feel that it interrupts their child initiated learning and it will give me more time to observe the children. I do 1 guided reading a week and 1 guided writing a week and my children have made good progress with only having this amount due to the continuous provision offering lots of opportunities for reading and writing.

 

You could have a CLL or PSRN acvitiy running for a whole morning. If you only have 10 children it shouldnt take you long to get through this, I work with my groups for about 20 minutes each. Then you can observe the children and suppor them in their child initiated play. Do the same in the afternoons for the topic etc. i agree it doesn't sound very EYFS to have all those specialist teachers but i guess you have to make the best of a bad situation! Good luck!

Thanks for your feedback. Having the specialist teachers is why I find it so difficult to plan my day and I don't want to be frowned upon if we are inspected next year which we are due for. So this is why I need to relook at my day and ensure I do have a balance and that I do spend enough time with the children during CI times. Your feedback reassured me. Thanks so much.

Just so I can see an example, could you by any chance upload your daily planning so I can see how it is done for you. Then I will dabble with mine from all the examples. I would really appreciate it. Thanks x
