Deb
Hi We've been exploring light and dark with our children, including using candles. I was wondering if anybody could suggest creative or mark making activities using candles that have worked with 3 and 4 year olds such as drawing with a candle and washing over with some sort of paint solution to show the image. Susan
If you do a wax resist picture you need a very thick wax deposit for it to be most effective, otherwise your watercolour paint wash will break through. But have a go and see what happens! You might find it most effective to give the children a pencil outline to trace over with their candle--perhaps their name or a simple image? If their mark making is at a completely random stage will they remember what they have drawn and understand what is happening with wax resist? Panders
Following on from Susan's reply, could you make special messages/pictures for individual children with the wax candle and the children colour wash over to find out what they are? Then those who really take on board what is happening could have a go at creating something for themselves in abstract form
Deb
Thank you Susan and Panders for your replies. Very helpful in helping me to clarify my thinking and I love the idea of drawing a special picture for each child and letting them discover what it is. Thanks.
