Writing Crisis

i hope someone can help as i am having a real crisis with writing. My higher ability children are able to make great attempts at writing, forming letters and sounding out words. For the middles and lowers at the moment they either have a go or they tell me the sounds they can hear and i will write them for them to trace over.

 

My questions are:

 

should i be asking children to dictate a sentence and then write it for them to copy? if so

do you ask them to tell you the sounds they can hear and only write what they hear or spell the word correctly?

 

or do you just let children have a go by themselves
