Help With Reading Presentation For Parents

Hello Everyone,

Hope you are all well and happy. I was wondering if anyone could help me or give me some advice. I have been asked by my local day nursery to attend a parents meeting they are having regarding reading. (I'm a teacher in Mainstream) Lots of the parents at the day nursery are hassling staff about why they aren't being given any reading scheme books (even when they are only three)

The nursery have asked me to go and support them in sending the mesage to the parents that the children are not ready for reading at that age and then explain how and when we introduce the children to books.

Has anyone out there ever done anything similar? Any ideas anyone?

I've just read a brilliant book called The Foundations of Literacy by Sue Palmer and Ros Bailey - very easy to read and sets out a simple seven stranded approach to preparing children for formal literacy learning, emphasisng the importance of developing oral language skills before moving onto written - if you can get hold of a copy, there's some really good stuff in there for your presentation!

There are some really simple messages in there that would be good to get across to parents...definitely worth a look!
