Guest
well done cupcake, we are learning and using makaton in our setting for one of our children who has Down Syndrome he came to us already using 50 words and is much quicker at learning than us!! we have had inhouse training provided by his specialist team and now use it even when it's not his session. i have just purchased 2 posters from www.signwithollie.com for our setting there is also a book that has stories and info on telling the story using sign it's not classed as Makaton but looks very similar. the posters have gone up at child's eye level and we have observed the children standing by the posters trying to make the signs of the letters/ numbers with their hands, it looks as if they are going to be a really valuable resource
Emmawill
its nice to atend a course in which your setting can really get the benefits. I and another member of my staff recently attended a 2 day Makaton course which we both really enjoyed. (it might be because the girls I was with were a real laugh and I haven't laughed so much in ages) but we now both use Makaton every session from weather, giving instructions etc . the children have oicked this up really quickly and nw when answering heir names now sign the 1st letter of their name, day of the week. We are also learning Makaton nusery Rhymes and the children can now sing Old Macdonald,Twinkle Twinkle,Dingly Dangly Scarecrow and this week we are learning 5 little speckled frogs as out them is Lifecycles, Oh and we can sign Baa Baa Black sheep. I would also like to go on further with this as it has reaaly nterested me.. If anyone gets the chance to do a course in this then give it a go . Its really interesting and the kids love it. Guest Wolfie
We also use Makaton a lot at our Centre - targets on children's IEPs often include a Makaton signing one. We also run a weekly Baby Signing group for parents/carers with babies under 12 months which also uses Makaton and is great fun!

Guest
We use Somerset Total Communication, the children take to it like ducks to water. It is so worthwhile to use with the early years. I find that signing 'sorry' is so much easier for the children and eases so many situations.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, its Somerset total communications we are using, as we have a child with no speech at all, so she was the catalyst to get all staff trained. Its amazing how well she is communicating with us now...in fact its brilliant. Just need to get the assessment out of the way so I get awarded the level 1 then I can sign up for level 2. Its also quite amazing how very young shy children feel more confident signing their needs. The children have got used to us signing as we speak now and we are seeing more and more children using the odd sign here and there to speak to each other.
