What Role Does Storytelling Have?

I am a PGCE student specialising in early years and am looking for information and opinions relating to the role of storytelling in the early years setting, as well as literature which supports/refutes the importance of storytelling.

Thanx for your help :D

Hi Annette,

We seem to be looking for the same kind of information. I have spent hours on the net and there is lots on storytelling, but not that much on how it impacts on the whole curriculum.

I work with quite a number of children who have some problems with language in one way or another, so info on signing and storytelling would be useful.

Have a look at 'The role of storytelling in early literacy development' a B.Ed paper by Louise Phillips on www.home.aone.net.au/stories/doc/childhd.htm

Also look at Maria Montessori and Jerome Bruner and look on the National Literacy Trust and Times Ed sites.

Good luck. Fiona :D

Hi

I had a tutoe. Dr Carol Fox, a fantastic lady who wrote a book on story telling using her young son and a friend's daughter as subject matter..so to speak. Could be of some use. A search engine may show something up under her name.

Good Luck

Kate

Hi

Great to hear from others around the world who are interested in the role storytelling plays in the early childhood years. I have written 4 articles/ papers on this topic which may be of use-

1. Storytelling for Young Children in Junior Horizons, vol.7, no.3, 2002, pp.6-7

2. Storytelling: The seeds of children's Creativity in Australian Journal of Early Childhood, vol.25, no.3, 2000, p.1-5.

3. The Role of Storytelling in Early Literacy Development on www.home.aone.net.au/stories

4. Bridging Children's Understanding With Story: Storytelling as a tool for inspiring social action in young children an AECA 2001 Conference Paper

I have plans to set up my own website but in the meantime - if you are interested in any of these articles please email me at louptale@ozemail.com.au

Cheers
