If you go to Resources and look under Topic Support you will find ideas you could try under Weather and Seasons. In Members Articles there is an article on a drama about a snowman, and there are lots of ideas at the end of that article for the different areas of learning. Winter/cold lands is one of my favourite themes as there are so many wonderful books about Winter, Bears, Penguins, especially 'Lost and Found' and of course Raymond Briggs' 'The Bear,' which can lead on to wonderful art work and use of pencils for drawing.

Are doing cold climates too!

We have read Penguin Small, establishes North and South Poles (Polar bears and Penguins!)

We did Penguin Skating Painting - an idea from under 5's website.

Used ice to paint with. Sprinkle powder paint through sieve and use melting ice to mix (we did black paint and made penguins. Stuck a white belly onto each, with a fact that the child had learned about penguins during the week (they eat fish, they waddle, they can't fly etc etc)

Made polar bear and penguin hand puppets, and the children could re-enact the story.

Huge ice cubes in the water tray

Puffy snow paint (equal quantities of pva and shaving foam, making snow pics on dark paper!)

Soap flake snowmen.

This week we are looking at seals and walruses, the week after linking to the snowy animals book and making caribou and puffins, so that we have all animals and the children are able to re-enact again (this is their fave book, and all children can retell)

making bird food so we can look after the birds whilst so cold.

Physical sessions, snowy animal movements, penguin parachute games.

Hope this is of some use!

what about an Antarctic explorers base station, include sleeping bags, small kitchen area, magnfying glasses, simple recording mechanisms, camera, etc...

This is my topic at the moment and I am basing around "penguin small' and 'Lost and found' I have also managed to get some books from our local library and we have also watched in short bursts 'March of the Penguins' and they children have gained so much information from it.

Have fun!!!
