Hi there everyone, This is my first time on here and im abit nervous buit im hoping that you can help me because ive been reading all of the other topics and the advice seems amazing. Im so glad that i found this site.

IM an NQT in a reeption class and i am having big trouble planning my timetable. There isnt a previous one so i have to make it myself and the one i have is.......RUBBISH! I have been asked to do 5 lesons a day and i just cant make them fit? im trying to do carpet, group, plenary for each and its taking forever because each child isnt getting a turn at each activity? I know it sounds like a really stupic question but how do you guys do it? My lead teacher says that her children choose/free play all afternoon while she does readers and key words with them if that allowed because i would to do that but i didnt know if it was right and no 1 i work with is sure? Sorry for al of the questions but i really hope someone can help me because im really starting to worry. :o

Oh and this is my very first time here and i just cant figure it out atall so sorry for the lack of picture and interesting txt,lol x

Hi Stevie,

Welcome to the forum - please don't be nervous, we are a very nice bunch of people! I'm not a teacher but I'm sure you'll get lots of good advice soon. I'm going to move your topic out of Foundation Stage Profiles so that you get more replies. :o

Hi Stevie and welcome.

No need to apologise about anything, you are doing just fine and if you want an avatar you can set it all up reasonably easily although I'm no expert there!

Most importantly, thank you for making your first post. You should have an early years advisor and a cluster network to call upon at a local level to help you and you do sound as if you might have already made contact there as you talk about a lead teacher? Is your school asking you to teach 5 lessons? You dont need to be that formal in reception and I am not surprised that you are having difficulty fitting it all in, if that is the case.

Really, in reception you only need a timetable for those things that impact upon others in the school, so hall times for PE and any specialist facilities that you may access such as music, ICT, Library, art. If you are classroom based for these activities then you can be more flexible. It is quite a good idea to establish some sort of routine for yourself and the children so that you all know what to expect, so carpet times for teaching inputs may be at the same time every day and you may find it helpful to teach numeracy, for example, at the same time every day but that is up to you. If your school needs you to be formal you may want to do your literacy and numeracy in the mornings to play the game!

You should have a balance of activities across the day and the week and you may block some things as you will find it difficult to offer science, history and geography aspects of KUW every week. Remember in FS all areas should have equal weighting and that PSE underpins everything. You should also have opportunities to access the outdoors and for child initiated learning.

It will take a while to get sorted so keep asking questions. Hope that helps a little and I havent confused you more.
