Supporting Parents

I am reception teacher and FS co-ordinator at our 2 form entry school. We have been experiencing some difficulties with children in line with what seems to be happening nationally - poor listening skills, difficulty sharing/turn-taking etc. Talking one:one to some parents it seems children are not having regular bedtimes, watching inappropriate TV, going from pillar to post (breakfast club, after school club, other nurseries, childminders etc.) As our school focus is and has been for some time on accelerated learning and emotional literacy, we are planning a series of talks/workshops for parents of children who will be starting nursery and reception in September. We hope to hold these in June and I was wondering if anybody out there has done anything similar? or if anyone has any advice -??

By the way, this is the most useful site I have found for Early years - thanks a lot!! Keep up the good work.

Just wanted to add my welcome Jacky. I am not in a school so cannot answer your questions but I am sure many others will do so soon.

I'm glad you like the site-it has been a lifeline for many of us for a long time now. I'm sure you will gain a lot from it and hopefully be able to contribute too!

I work in a playgroup but as the mother of a child about to start school after the summer it sounds great to me. The only trouble is the very people you may be wanting to target are not the people who would go along to this sort of thing. I hope it works though and will be interested to hear how you get on. :)

Oh, and welcome to the site. :)

These are big issues and we constantly discuss them in the staff room! Sometimes we forget that parents are people too and many feel helpless, almost at the mercy of their kids! (I am a parent of 3 - all in our school - so I have a perspective on both sides!!!) I often hear things like "I can't get them to bed", "I can't ..." and it sounds like the authority has been taken away from the parent - scarey.

I intend to have informal chat times with parents next year as I find many come for similar advice on things. My Head has said I can use Friday afternoon assembly time (2.30-3.15) so I'm going to have refreshments in my classroom and set a different focus for discussion every time we meet (probably monthly) eg.

helping children read; early number work; the FS Profile; discipline; dealing with clinginess; good habits for good learning; why we group children and so on (further suggestions would be gratefully received!)

The parents seem quite positive and I shall trial it with a transition to Y1 meeting this term.

This forum would be informal and relaxed, where parents can share their own ideas and I can have some input. It is non-threatening and a way of getting parents on side early!

Don't know whether that's useful to you, but I'm looking forward to it.

heyjude :o
