   The Christian celebration of Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day, is the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Lent is a time of fasting in preparation for Easter, and the tradition of pancake making arose as people would use up all their rich foods such as eggs, butter and flour before Lent began.
