Early Years News

Data supplied by the Recruitment and Employment Federation (REC) regarding job vacancies in the early years, shows that in January, vacancies had increased by 146.2% on pre-pandemic levels. You can read a short summary of the data by Early Years Alliance here. Meanwhile, the Department for Education (DfE) have launched a recruitment campaign to encourage more people to work in Early Years. This includes adverts available on YouTube and being shown on TV and in a variety of venues around the country. You can watch the video advert from this link. As part of the recruitment campaign, the DfE is also trialling a sign-on bonus programme in some Local Authorities in England, where each eligible new/ returning worker will receive up to £1,000 (after tax and NI).

FSF articles and podcasts

This month we have an article by children’s author and counsellor, Hannah Peckham, reflecting on how books can aid emotional literacy.

There are three brilliant new podcast episodes to share with you in February. We’re joined by Ben Cooper, Research Manager at the Fabian Society to discuss early years policy making; author and playwright Richard O’Neill shares his early memories of storytelling growing up in a fully nomadic Romani Gypsy family, and the importance of storytelling today; and teacher and trainer Caprice Fox reflects on building an LGBTQIA+ inclusive learning community. You can find all our podcast episodes wherever you like to listen, or from this link.

Tapestry news and resources

Over at Tapestry HQ a new guide is available to support your reflective practice and professional development. The Beginner’s Guide to Establishing Meaningful Relationships with Families, is written by speech and language specialist teacher and early years and racial trauma consultant Jaziea Farag. Like all the guides in the series, this is designed to support meaningful conversations in your team. You can download the guide for free from here.

Three new courses are now live on Tapestry CPD. An Introduction to Intersectionality is based on the Beginner’s Guide to Intersectionality in the Early Years written by Warda Farah. And to support your use of Tapestry, we have Tapestry Reflections and Reflective Practice, and Activities on Tapestry.

Wishing you all a safe and happy February

From Helen, Steve and all of us at the FSF and Tapestry
