Guest Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Sounds chaotic Beth! What new language are you trying to learn? Quote
beth1 Posted March 7, 2007 Author Posted March 7, 2007 Umm Urdu with a little help from the staff who can speak it. Thats one of the things I don't like about it I cannot fully understand what the children are trying to convey to me. I talk back and ask them about the toy and most of the time I get a strange look. The words I know are: Alsam- alkum (ap) good morning Gee - yes Chup - be quiet and that it at the moment. Now if I could pick up the language quicker I would probuly understand more of what is going on. Beth Quote
Guest Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Good luck with it. It is interesting though as this is how a child would be feeling in a setting that spoke no English, and the parents of that child. Quote
Guest Wolfie Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Yes, I would look at this as a very positive experience - it gives you a real insight into how children with no English must feel when they enter a setting where their home language isn't spoken; use your knowledge of how effective non-verbal communication and gestures can be in communicating with the children and remember that they are learning as much about English from you as you are learning about Urdu from them!
