To complete my Early Years Educator qualification I need to discuss the importance of reflection in relation to professional development. Is there a particular theorist you feel supports this in a better way? Has anyone got any views how this works in practice? Do you use this often in your own setting to think about your teaching methods and for identifing areas of growth?

Many thanks

Hi Beth,

Have you come across the articles here on the FSF yet? They refer to the two 'biggies' of reflective practice- Dewey and Schon 😀

In my view, reflective practice should be a cyclical endeavour- carried out with an open, questioning approach. Starting with an open-ended question is often a good place to start, eg 'How are children using the outdoor area? What can we improve on?' or 'How do we support parents with learning through play at home? How can we develop this so that all families feel included?
