Intersted to hear that you are at Fishburn. I didn't realise you had a unit. I live just outside Sedgefield, although Our unit is in Thornaby.

How many children do you have in your unit? We have 30 reception and 25 am/pm nursery children.

We have had an Early Years Unit for about 12 years now but only became a fully integrated FSU last September. So in some ways it wasn't such a big step for us as other schools.

Currently we have 27 reception and 26 am/pm children ( We have admission limit of 35 for reception and over subscribed for nursery places this year and having to turn children away)

if you have two inter-connecting rooms, how does one person float? We have 4 staff, but find that we need 2 people to float as we have a large room split by low furniture into 2 areas. If you are at one side, anything could be happening at the other. I am finding that having 55 children in 1 area is just manic.

The way we work one room is set up for literacy based activity areas (writing area, performance are, book area, listening are, role play area, music area, fine motor area, and malleable area plus PC and interactive while board. The other room has a number area, block play area, construction area, DT workshop, light box, small world, and investigation area plus PC. The third area which can be seen from both rooms has wet and dry sand water and creative areas. Also the children have access to the secure outdoor area which can be seen from the main rooms but there is usually an adult with them. There is usually an adult working at a focused task in each of the main rooms and a third adult also working in the rooms or outdoors at a focused task. The fourth member of staff is free to move around the unit depending on their focus for the day. For example if they are tracking a particular child they will move around all the areas or they may spend a whole session in one room.

We had 3 students up to last week and have regular parent helpers.
