Guest Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 i wonder if anyone can help me.My head has said that it is not a legal requirement to have a teacher in a nursery which is a ttached to a first school and that Nursery nurses or classrom assisstants can run it.I mentioned this to another EY teacher I know and she said she thought there was legislation coming out this year which says that a Nursery attached to a school DOES require a teacher to be there .Id really appreciate any advice on this .Thank you
Guest Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I thought there had to be a teacher in the class but a local school near to us has a TA in charge of nursery and another in charge of reception. A teacher does all the planning and is responsible for overseeing what goes on but does not teach in either class. Sue

I thought this was a requirement. Cathy
Guest Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 I think there was a discussion about this somewhere else and from my memory which is not that good - there doesn't have to be although the rules are very unclear. Perhaps someone can direct you to this previous link as it was very comprehensive. Nikki
Guest Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 I do not know the legal requirements but I would think that the adult child ratio's would differ depending on whether a qualified teacher was present or not, just a thought. Peggy
Guest Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 As far as I am aware a school isn't breaking any rules if a teacher is not in a classroom. This rule applies for all age groups. However heads must adhere to the ratio rule 1:13 for 3/4 year olds.

I am responsible for all planning and assessment which is overseen by the FS co-ordinator. To answer Peggy - the ratio of 1:13 remains the same whether or not it is a teacher or other practitioner present.
