Guest
Just wondering if any of you still send home high frequency words home to learn and if so how do you organise this? Do you send in a certain order and so many at a time?
Susan
I think you should use letters and sounds and the phonic phases if you are going to do this.

KST
I send home a word list each week which is made up of words with the phonemes/digraphs we have learnt that week. I also include the tricky word we have learnt but that is in blue so they can see its tricky. I put a note at the front for parents to undertstand that the word lists are support the blending of the sounds and not about learning them by sight (except the tricky words). I started doing these last year and wasn't sure if it would work, but it has been brilliant. the children love their word books and most children developed blending skills quicker and they helped with recognises sounds. I send home the sounds with just a few words for low achieving children. I go through the words with the children on at the end of the week with each individual child, its not like a test but put to them more as show me what's you practised at home. There is no punishment if they can't do them!! I then give the next list to those who read those/or most of them. Hope that makes sense.
