What Is A Complex Word?

I work in the EY's and one of the profile points relating to writing is for children to write simple and complex words. I understand simple words to be regular, CVC words, but just wondered what your thoughts were for complex words?

 

Would this be spelling tricky words, writing longer words?

I always take it to mean longer words, and words that have more than 1 syllable.

When you're willing to have a go at writing 'elephant' or 'orang-u-tang' and put in a reasonable number of sensible letters, then you're onto complex words. One of my class wrote oragootag. Not bad, huh?
