Guest
As it looks as if this bitterly cold weather is with us for the next few weeks, I wonder if anyone has any ideas for outdoor activities that will keep children actively involved. I'm suffering brain freeze at the moment and can't think much beyond wheeled vehicles and observing the frost! I would love to build up a resource of ideas
Guest
mark making using feet, chat about cold, ice, vapour from intakes of breath, heat, keeping warm, look for icicles, sheets of ice. fill balloons with water and freeze, place one indoors in a tray leave one outside time them to see which defrosts first. look for any changes in plants, blackened buds, bulbs shooting, etc make bird cakes for birds, talk about looking after birds in winter, look at books and use them to identify birds arriving to eat bird cakes. Ask parent for scraps to incorporate iin bird cake mixture. use outside area for story time , music and movement, games and singing. Jusy enjoy cold dry weather... Guest
We had fun outside today. The children discovered items in the outdoor area that have frozen in ice blocks so we decided to make our own. They filled a cup with water and put something in it and decided where to put it to freeze. We will then investigate the best way to put them to free the items. Guest
Aiming snowballs into a bucket. We had a large whiteboard nearby, the children who wanted to play wrote their names on the board and put a tally next to their name when they scored. Great for working out 1 more when they score an extra point! At the end the total scores were counted and we worked out who the winner was. Guest
Today (on the school run!) we: *looked for icicles and which cars had most ice/snow on them *discussed why there was less ice/snow on the sunny side of the road *compared black and white ice (tried sliding on both in new school shoes ) *wrote our names on the snow in the playground with our feet - left and right to see which was "best"(yep, new school shoes again!) * wore one glove to see which hand got coldest! Lots of fun and we had such plans for the trip home but the snow was so bad school closed early and one of the parents did the school run in his 4 wheel drive! Bless him - shame he forgot to take wellies for his 6 year old daughter and she plodded the 1/4 mile back to the car in 2+ inches of snow IN HER NEW SCHOOL SHOES!!
