Guest
I wanted to find out what people's opinions are on the children, mainly boys, who like to make guns and use them in their play in Reception. I have a number of boys who are showing a lot of creativity in using different construction - sticklebricks, Knex, and even junk modelling to make guns and play together. What do you think ? Should this be stopped. I have encouraged them to use their imagination as the guns can not have bullets, e.g turns girls into frogs etc. It is a difficult question as it shows high levels of creativity and gets boys involved in roleplay, esp in the outdoor area. Guest
I personally don't mind the children (boys!) taking part in gun play - they are only acting out what they have seen after all, but I often hear other staff members saying "we don't have guns at nursery". As long as these children are helped to respect other children's space and don't purposefully shoot at children who may become upset, then i would prefer to tap into their interests and pull out as much learning as possible! dublinbay
This has been discussed many times before on the forum. If you do a forum search you should find some interesting opinions relating to gun play and superhero play.
Guest
Hi - there is apublication from DFES regarding "tuning into boys" - boys and sometimes girls will make a gun out of anything and everything just as you have said - alwasy brilliant not to turn them off and be negative, but just like you are doing give them ideas to extend their play - could even have a superhero week..........
