I think you've made the "right" decision for you.

 

You had doubts at the outset but went to find to interview to find out more. You were unsure after the interview, perhaps not helped by their tardy response, but the whole situation just doesn't have a good feeling to it.

At least you know that you are 'wanted' and you were the one in control over the choice you made. As you say, many people are not so fortunate.
