Planning By Books

Hi guys, I was interested to read about the planning that some of you do around books. Would this be an appropriate method in a pre-school where most of the children are under 4, or is it mostly for in reception classes. :o

Many preschools are working in a more child initiated way but if your story is appropriate there is no reason why this shouldn't be ok and you can follow the children's interests from it.

Hi - we had a go at planning (loosely!) around books last year(playgroup: children 2.5 - 4 years) and it worked really well as we chose stories which were already established favourites, particularly, Dear Zoo, Hungry Caterpillar and Going on a Bear Hunt - so in this respect it fitted in with a child-led planning ethos; it formed a thread which ran alongside other planning around individual and group interests, if that makes sense! In fact, a lot of child initiated activity came out of the stories (e.g. the role play cave area really fed the children's imaginative play and language, and led to a lot of play with torches and den-making!)
