Early Years News

This month the early years sector sees yet another ministerial change, with David Johnston stepping into the role of Children, Families and Wellbeing Minister after the recent cabinet reshuffle.

The newly formed Early Education and Childcare Coalition (EECC) has published a report as part of its official launch. Pulse Check 2023: Public Attitudes Towards Early Education and Childcare shares data on the public mood about the early years, with a view to understanding what they currently think about the sector.

And this year Early Education is celebrating its centenary! On 21st September Professor Tina Bruce, Dr Stella Louis and Sally Cave will take part in a Centenary Conversation: Past, present and future - passing on the baton. You can find out more about this event here.

FSF articles and podcasts

This month Senior Lecturer Jayne Garcia’s article shares advice on making sure your setting is ready to meet the needs of each child as they transition from home to early years provider.

Our latest podcast episode is a conversation with PE lead Omar Green, reflecting on a child-centred approach to PE. Jules and Ben chat with Omar about what to consider when developing your PE curriculum, building on the strengths of children and teachers, and getting children’s input. Find all our podcast episodes wherever you like to listen, or from this link.

Tapestry news and resources

The Tapestry team have a couple of new, free, downloadable resources to share with you, created in collaboration with sector specialists.

The first is A Beginner's Guide to Belonging, written by Educational and Child Psychologist Dr Siya Mngaza and created to support childminders, nurseries and schools in having necessary conversations about belonging.

The second is the Mandela Model Workbook, written by Professor Eunice Lumsden for early years leaders, to support them in developing belonging for their families and staff in their setting’s community.

We also have a new course for you over on Tapestry CPD. Created by members of the education team, Personal Social and Emotional Development in a child’s Fifth Year is designed to support reflective practice if you're new to Reception; or an experienced teacher looking for an opportunity to support PSED analysis in the 5th year. You can find it, along with our other free CPD opportunities, via cpd.tapestry.info

Wishing you all a safe and happy September
