Welcome to the FSF October newsletter
Early Years News
Earlier this month, the government announced its funding plans for up to 300 school-based nurseries. Primary schools can now apply for up to £150,000 of £15 million capital funding, to support the initial 300 new or expanded nurseries across England. This is the first stage in Labour’s overall plan to deliver 3,000 school-based nurseries. You can read more about this on the government website.
In addition, the Department for Education (DfE) have announced a shift in the language used around early years funding. They will replace the word ‘free’ with ‘Government funded’ when referring to 15 and 30 hours funding.

FSF articles and podcasts
This month we're sharing an article by Dr Lucretia Carter Berry about the power of positive words in anti-racism education with young children. Dr Carter Berry says that research has consistently demonstrated that biases can form in children at remarkably young ages, making it imperative to counteract these biases through the deliberate use of positive, affirming language and practices.
Our new podcast episodes feature a focus on the role of childminders with Tina Maltman from Childminding UK, and a conversation with early years educator, consultant and author, Jamel Carly Campbell about his new children’s book Olu’s Teacher, which takes us through the journey of starting nursery. As always, you can find all our podcast episodes from this link, or from wherever you like to listen.

Android and iOS app updates
Over at Tapestry HQ, there have been a few updates across both our apps last month which we recommend you download. It’s also a good idea to allow the Tapestry app to auto update if you haven’t already to ensure you don’t miss out on any improvements coming up.
The iOS app has been updated to improve the experience of those using the Care Diary on the app. And on Android you can now edit your images before uploading them to observations and you can split group observations via the app.
Share your Tapestry Tip
If you’re a Tapestry and social media user, we’d love it if you’d share with us and other Tapestry customers the creative ways you use Tapestry to transform learning outcomes for your children. For example, the Head of Operations at Dolphin’s nursery, told us:
The use of the Areas of Concern screen with Reflections has had a positive impact on the development of the children. By identifying and addressing concerns early on, staff are able to help children reach their full potential.
