Welcome to the FSF March newsletter

Early Years News

This month, Ofsted have launched The Big Listen which seeks views right across [their] work, from schools and children’s social care to teacher training and early years. They are asking for responses on 4 key aspects – reporting, inspection practice, culture and purpose, and impact. You can access more information and add your response here.

There is also a consultation underway on childminder recruitment and retention. Set up by the Department for Education (DfE), the consultation is open for responses until 10th May. Follow this link to learn more about it and add your thoughts.

New Content

FSF articles and podcasts

In our March article, educator and researcher Sarah Holmes shares her experience of exploring spaces ‘in-between’ homes and settings as places to begin to connect and build relationships with children and families. You can read Sarah’s article On my way to nursery – my teacher walked with me! from this link.

We recorded a podcast with award winning primary school librarian Rumena Aktar as part of our content to Celebrate Books in the lead up to World Book Day. Rumena talked about the importance of libraries as places to inspire reading. We also chatted with best-selling author and publisher Winsome Duncan about the Look Like Me Book Challenge and what needs to be done to change children’s literature to be more inclusive of Black and Brown characters. You can find all our podcast episodes wherever you like to listen, or from this link.

Meanwhile, we reposted a short reflective article on the Forum about rethinking dressing up for World Book Day. You can check that out and share your thoughts and ideas here.

Tapestry news and resources

Rumena created lots of content to help us Celebrate Books. As well as the podcast, there are three short videos where Rumena focuses on reducing barriers to reading for children with the help of illustrated novels, non-fiction books and stories for the early years. Rumena also wrote an article sharing ideas about how to set up or improve your library. You can find all of these resources on Tapestry’s Celebrating Books 2024 page

Wishing you all a safe and happy March

From Helen, Steve and all of us at the FSF and Tapestry
