Early Years News

After Labour’s win in the general election at the beginning of the month, we have some new ministers in charge of education policy. Having been Shadow Education Secretary since 2021, Bridget Phillipson is now Education Secretary. In a letter to the education sector after her appointment, Ms Phillipson placed Early Years firmly alongside all phases of education:

To all working in early years, children’s services, schools, further and higher education…

And later in the letter:

Supported by your experience and expertise, this government will expand our early years education system, drive high and rising standards and reform curriculum and assessment.

You can read the full letter here.

Meanwhile, Labour MP Stephen Morgan is now minister with the responsibility for the early years. The sector will be waiting with anticipation to see what a change of government will bring.

New Content

FSF articles and podcasts

We have a new article about strategies to support parental engagement by Alicia Wilkins, who has been a primary teacher, early years educator, and is a mum of 2 children under five.

And there are three new podcast conversations for you to listen to. Teacher, podcast host and bestselling author Lee Parkinson chats with Ben and Jules about using AI; Jackson Ogunyemi joins us to share strategies to help children and adults ‘surf the wave of negativity’; and Jules sits down with the Headteacher of Wentworth Nursery School, Farzana Chowdhury, to take a deep dive into how they approach planning, teaching and learning. You can find all our podcast episodes from this link, or from wherever you like to listen.

Tapestry 2024 Survey

Thank you to everyone who completed the annual Tapestry Survey this year. As always, the findings give an interesting insight into the sector, with a focus on the expanded offer for two-year-olds, advice for the next government, and how we make and use observations. You can read all about the survey results in this blog post.

Wishing you a safe and happy July

From Helen, Steve and all of us at the FSF and Tapestry
