Welcome to the FSF December newsletter
Early Years News
In their Plan for Change: Milestones for mission led-government document published earlier this month, the government set out milestones that will be used to measure achievement in its ‘six key missions’ by the end of this Parliament. A focus on early years features in the mission to ‘Break down barriers to opportunity’:
To achieve our overall mission objective of closing the opportunity gap, we have set a milestone of a record proportion of children starting school ready to learn. We will measure our progress through 75% of five-year-olds reaching a good level of development in the early years foundation stage assessment by 2028.

FSF articles and podcasts
This month we released the last episode in our podcast miniseries ‘Men in the Early Years’. Claudio Sisera, who is Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Male Childcare and Teaching Jobs, joined Stephen Kilgour from our education team to talk about Claudio’s route into the Early Years and how his organisation is making a difference. Stephen was also a guest in a podcast episode, alongside his co-author Doncaster Early Years Inclusion Officer Ann Lowe, discussing themes in their book The Inclusive Early Years Educator. As always, you can find all our podcast episodes from this link, or from wherever you like to listen.
This month we’re highlighting the article Nurturing children’s spiritual development in early childhood context by Dr Fengling Tang, who is Senior Lecturer in Early Childhood Studies, School of Education, at the University of Roehampton. Fengling writes: The notion of the spiritual dimension of humanity has developed for centuries, mostly linked with religion, faith or divine nature of an invisible higher being. It is only in more recent times that spirituality has been investigated outside religious contexts. For example, spirituality is considered as an innate ability of the human being, including young children, to show awareness and consciousness of the surrounding worlds through curiosity, wonder, a sense of compassion and love.

A new guide
A new resource is now available to download for free - ‘A Beginner’s Guide to The Lunar New Year’ has been written by besea.n to support educators in having necessary conversations about the Lunar New Year.
Tapestry have partnered with easyfundraising
As we approach the festive holiday season, a reminder that settings and schools can now raise funds for free through easyfundraising.

And finally…
This will be the last FSF newsletter we will be sending out to you. When things come to an end it often means there are new beginnings – and in January 2025 we will begin a new Tapestry Education newsletter, which will include the kind of content we have shared in the FSF newsletter.
We will be sending an email to everyone on this mailing list, inviting you to sign up to our Tapestry Education newsletter so you can stay up to date with us going forwards. We will also be sharing details of how to sign up on our social channels, as well as on our website, tapestry.info.
We’d like to thank you for receiving our FSF newsletters over the years, and the Forum will still be there for you to connect with other professionals.
Wishing you a happy and safe December and holiday season,
From Helen, Steve and all of us at the FSF and Tapestry
