Suncream

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a really good suncream policy. We have had a regular issue with one of the mums refusing to put suncream on her child. The child is Afro Caribbean and the parents have been continuously arguing with us that their child doesn't need cream as they never burn. I explained that irrelavent of the child's colouring All children are capable of burning, has anyone else had this issue, if so how have you dealt with it and is there anything in your policies which cover this?

No policies but the following links might give you some facts with which to arm yourself.

http://www.skincancer.org/prevention/skin-cancer-and-skin-of-color - a us site but relevant

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/5219752.stm - some years old but quite compelling

For the record I'm black and used to think that way until I got sunburnt! It flaming well hurts.

Last year we enrolled on the sunsafe for nurseries and pre-schools scheme. I have just updated our setting this year. It makes you think about how equipped you are for the summer in simple steps. It also provides a letter and sun safe information for all parents, a policy and downloadable resources.

We had this issue a while back too - in the end we got mum to sign a disclaimer that she was aware of our policy and her responsibilities against it but didn't want sun cream applying...and the reason for her decision

we made sure LO was out of the sun at peak times and popped a long sleeved top and cap on to give additional protection

YY to the sunsafe accreditation - easy to do and really does get you thinking! http://www.sunsafeschools.co.uk/
