This tutorial will take you through how you can link Montessori activities to Development Matters Statements. To do this you will need to have both the Montessori and EYFS frameworks enabled on your account, if you haven't, you just need to follow this tutorial.

Once you've ensure both frameworks are enabled on your account you will need to start adding an observation which you can do by going to the main observation page (1) and then clicking on the '+ Add Observation' button (2).

Then you'll need to select the Montessori framework in the assessments section in order to add your assessment. To be able to link an activity to appropriate EYFS statements you do need to select a refinement which you can do from the drop-down (1).

To then link the activity you will need to click on the Link.jpg  icon that appears next to the activity name (2).

When you click on the link icon Link.jpg, a new box containing the EYFS links for that particular activity will pop up. The links will be broken down by Area, Aspect, Age Band and Statement.

An Red%20diamond.jpg icon next to an age band indicates that a suggestion exists (1). This may appear next to multiple age bands within the same aspect and you can only select ONEage band per aspect. Use your judgement to select the most appropriate age band and statement. (If not, then the age band that appears on the screen will be the statement selected by default).

An Blue%20diamond.jpg icon next to an age band indicates the band that is currently selected for your observation (2).

You can add a refinement for the EYFS age band you select as well here from the 'No Refinement' drop-down (3).

If you're happy with the EYFS age band and/or refinement you've selected, you just need to click on the 'Update EYFS' button (4); you can cancel this process at any point by clicking on the 'Cancel' button (5).

For a further explanation about linking EYFS and Montessori assessments, you just need to click on the 'More info' link (6). This message reinforces the point that by selecting age bands that may not be appropriate for the child/children linked to the observation, it may result in the child/children appearing above/below age related expectations.

If an age band and refinement has been manually selected from the EYFS picker before you select EYFS links from the Montessori picker (points 1 & 2 in the screenshot below), this age band and refinement will appear with the blue diamond next to it (3). You do still have the option to view our suggested linked age bands though, indicated by the red diamonds next to the age bands (4), to decide whether you'd prefer to keep your selection or choose from the suggestions though.

If none or only some of the statements are applicable to your observation, you can either:

a) Untick any selected statements and just choose an appropriate age band and refinement.

b) Select 'Not Assessed' for the age band/s and statement/s that do not apply (you can then add your own age bands and statements from the EYFS picker as you normally would for any observation).

c) Leave the age band that is applicable ticked and mark the age band that is not applicable as 'Not Assessed'/untick the statement.

So, that's how to link EYFS assessments when assessing with the Montessori framework! Do remember, any selected EYFS assessments will contribute to the EYFS snapshot and analysis screens available on Tapestry.

You are able view which particular Montessori observations have contributed towards a EYFS assessment on the 'Montessori Summative Assessment' screen. This tutorial talks you through where to find this screen.
