Managing staff using tapestry in sessions

Recommended Posts

As the title suggests I'm looking at how other settings manage staff using tapestry in session. I have had to speak to my staff on numerous occasions because I've walked into the room and see them buried in their iPads. It's tricky because I know they need to complete their obs but they are the eyes and ears in the room first and foremost. We never leave a member of staff alone in a room with children but at times I've seen 3 out of 4 staff on their iPads at once!

Would be interested to hear if this is an issue for any other settings.

Thanks

We had exactly the same issue so now staff take the photo 'in the moment' jot some notes and then they have 1 hour non contact time each week to type them up fully then they do the linking at home. It works so much better and everything runs much smoother now :)

I have also put my foot down and limited to 1 in depth, multi linking observation per week per child as some staff were doing 2 or 3 a day. We do have one observation per child each half term which is just updated with wow moments or snippets they have said etc and then that is added to journal at the end of the half term - so at the moment the observation is called 'Summer chat' - Hope that makes sense?!

Thank you that really does help a lot and reassures me that we are not the only ones having this problem. I have some very proactive staff who will upload after session but others that won't so I like your idea of having an hour a week non contact. I will put this forward as a suggestion for September. Thanks

we do the same as mrsbat as we also found that all staff were heads down and doing obs and no-one seemed to be watching interacting with the children as well as they had.

no problems since - lots of photos taken with notes which were written up non contact time.

When we first started using Tapestry, I was excited at the thought of staff being able to complete obs there and then and bought tablets to do this. The first morning and about an hour in I was making an observation but feeling very uncomfortable about doing so on a tablet. The children wanted to know if they could play games on it and it just felt wrong. I too was worried about staff being engrossed in using them and not being 'in the room'. The tablets were returned that day to Amazon and we are back to post it notes. If possible staff are given time in session out of ratio to complete them or paid to do them in their own time.

well what you need is my group! because try as you might you haven't got a hope in **** of getting anything done in a session other than spending many hours teaching them how to play /get on with others /give them a cuddle or in any other way sort them out!! Add to that the fact our wifi is rubbish and you have the solution!!!!! :o  ::1a

we all have a tablet...I can never find mine...or I can't find my glasses to see what i'm doing.!

We have fire tablets with coloured colours the children aren't that interested as soon as they know it doesn't have anything interesting on it...other than that it's quality not quantity that counts! someone doing 3 good obs can be much better than 10 bad ones

Hi and welcome to the fsf Sophie.

I've been having problems with the inconsistency of ob numbers being added, in first two weeks back they go between practically nothing and a stupidly high number (and why I've been asking about an easy way to see the number from each staff), I also ask that one ob goes in each week for each of their key children (we have a NS ob that has evidence added to it over a half term) so it's more about staying in touch with the parents.

I have a policy but it was more based on security and responsibility than how many observations at the time of writing it so I may need to revisit it, happy to share it with you if you want it as a starting point to change/add to :-)

Morning!

Is there any chance you could share your policy so we could put it in our resource library? That would be really helpful!

Thank you
