Anybody who uses the kitchen to cook food or prepare food, we have staff who are Food hygiene trained. This is only 3 people in our setting of 10 staff. Other members of staff who might "handle food", are not trained but are aware of basic hygiene rules. We have a self service option for children.. so how it works is quite simple for us. The cook (currently the owner or manager, both trained) prepare the food and put this into the self serving area.. children then select a plate or bowl and then select the food they want and go and sit down to eat it. So staff rarely even need to touch a plate or bowl until the child as finished or they need support..

We do an online food safety course. All staff do this. We also do the in-house training in the Safer Food Better Business folder as this is approved by Environmental Health. We had our EH inspection last week and kept our five stars so I'm guessing we're doing what is required!

We all do online although I did check with EH and he said only one person needed to do it as long as the information was shared and all staff followed the guidelines - personally happier in the knowledge everyone has done the course, we also got a 5* recently so we are doing something right

3.48 of the New Statutory Framework states:

Providers must be confident that those responsible for preparing and handling food are competent to do so. In group provision, all staff involved in preparing and handling food must receive training in food hygiene.

Our LEA has always told us that anyone who prepares snack or does cookery with the children MUST have Food Hygiene training, when asked if we could have 2 (out of 6) staff trained and then everyone else done 'in-house' we were told no. Therefore we all had to do the training, it was costly.

haven't tried them though!

anyone handling plates/cups etc should really have a level 1 everyone else a level 2 unless you are preparing full meals and then your EHO may require you to have a level 3.but as I say check with your EHO as they would be the ones inspecting and grading

Just a tip.... if you use anti bacterial spray on your tables before snack, make sure you know how long it needs to be applied before it's wiped off. One of the inspectors asked me this and thank goodness I answered correctly. We always use Home Bargains anti bac, which can be wiped off immediately, but some have to stay longer.
