Up date service

majority of our staff only have standard dbs but any new staff have the update service - it is too expensive for us to do this to existing staff at the moment but will do it if it becomes compulsory but with 12 staff to do it is a lot of money.

also found that when i went to do some voluntary work i explained i had a dbs with update facility and was told "oh we will do our own dbs anyway" so seems a bit pointless at the moment until everyone uses the update service as it should be used

Hi,

Can anyone clarify this.....

It is recommended that all early years staff have a DBS which is linked to the up date service. As several staff have just got the standard DBS.

Thanks

Where has this statement been taken from? We still have staff on CRB's and until it becomes a requirement rather than a recommendation we are not updating existing staff. Any new staff that we employ have to sign up to the update service as part of their terms and conditions.

Ofsted did my CRB as a manager years ago and never felt the need to redo it! I have new staff on DBS with update but get staff to sign a suitability declaration that include statement that they will inform me of any changes to their suitability. I have a statement about all the requirements on the back so that is covered. As others have said it is far too expensive to do all the current staff.

Can I have additional clarification. If staff have a DBS that was done in, say, 2012, does this need to be redone, if they have completed a staff suitability declaration? Is there a time limit for DBS?

so i may be completely wrong here! but i thought anyone who had a DBS has to have it on update service as of last september??? if however you are on CRB there is no requirement to change but you would need to do an annual declaration for suitability etc. We have tried to change everyone on to DBS except me as i felt this might cause an issue with ofsted!!

CRB or DBS has no time limit at all, 3 years is said to be good practice but an annual declaration and regular supervisions are a must. Owners/committee etc must be checked through OFSTED DBS route and must now sign up to update service, all other staff including managers where not the nominated person are checked now same as all other staff members and it is recommended to be on update but not mandatory.

We have it all staff (new and on a rolling programme of updating) have to register for update as part of their contract. I have used update service when taking on new staff but there are strict rules to what is excepted, said state schools are converting to DBS but don't use the update as many schools won't accept update service.

Update service is good tool if it was used more widely to make it more effective for the holder

Hi,

So its not mandatory to be on the update service. As some staff had a new DBS in 2016 and this would mean that they would need to do an new one in order to be on the update service.

I think its a case of waiting for the three years and then get them on the update service, with costings etc....
