Display ideas

Recommended Posts

I've just spent my second holiday day in school sorting my classroom out - it's at the very much worse before it gets better stage! However, I'm having something of a dilemma. In addition to the display boards in my room I have inherited another 6 in the corridor outside it! The ones immediately outside my room around the door I'm going to use to display children's photos and a 'Welcome to...' sign' but I'm stuck for ideas for the other 3. One is about 1m square, one about 2m square the third is about 1.5 x 4 or 5 m going round a corner.

I will use the boards inside the classroom to display children's work that fits our changing topics throughout the year but I'd like the ones outside to be something a bit more 'generic' so that I don't feel pressured to change them too often. Things like the school values etc. are being displayed elsewhere and I'm stuck!

Has anyone got any ideas? I'm pretty good at realising something once I have a starting point but I can't think of anything at the moment!

Will parents see these boards, if so, how often? Could you do a photo display of your timetable say, in general terms, so parents can see what happens and are able to talk to their children about it or understand what their child is trying to describe, e.g how they do group times, or need to get ready to do things.

We ask parents to tell us all about their children, but rarely do we get to know much about our child's teacher. Could you have an all about Miss Froglet board and your TA's. Obviously only putting info on that you are comfortable with and appropriate!! The joy of baking etc!

On the subject of display boards -am I the only one who hates doing the whole change of them - I love it when they are all fresh and ready to go, but changing the backing paper is something I just put off until its got to be done! Really is a 2 man job - unless you have any hints or tips. We have 3 huge boards.

May depend on the type of board, but we painted ours , so no backing paper, was originally to save costs but ended up an easy way of changing it as it didn't fade so did not need changing unless we got fed up with the colour.. I used to buy tester pots and watch for them reduced, also asked parents for left over tins of paint even with a small amount in them..

The bit I really dislike about changing display boards is removing the staples - especially if I've inherited the board from someone who didn't take them all out previously. After the last few days in school my hands have so many nicks and scratches (and are also really dry from the cleaning) that they're painful. I've just rubbed some lavender oil in to help hopefully!

I love the idea of painting boards but unfortunately several of mine are actually really badly cut fibreboard, often in two pieces so they really do need covering up. All my classroom boards are now backed and some of my outside the classroom ones - just need to keep working on the ideas for decorating them!

What about a class competition or rota where groups of children can plan and design the boards? It could based on topics, interests, beliefs, school ethos (how children interpret these), anything. They could vote on which ones are used.

Ideas for backing boards along the communication friendly spaces idea - hessian material can be bought quite cheaply on ebay (other selling sites are available) or maybe local markets????

could you use one to display 'outdoors learning' ? a mix of things children have done outside ..art, writing, numbers in environment etc along with supporting photos maybe, or a 'British Values' board, I'm not meaning union jacks etc, but maybe speech bubbles recording kind comments or deeds they've made/done to help each other, photos showing listening to each other, working together or maybe a mark making tree, with lots of leaves added, maybe different coloured leaves to suit the season, would also show the mark making/writing progress through the year.

Thank you for more ideas - am definitely beginning to get pictures in my head now. As for the backing with hessian - really like the idea. For now, all my classroom boards are backed with brown paper (as in parcel wrapping paper) and have been for about 4 years. I only moved to this school in January, did the same thing and now our entrance hall revamp has had the brown paper treatment! It creates a completely different (calm and restful) feel.

My tip is to not put staples all the way in. Don't put the stapler flush with the board. You can blue tack a bit of card near where the staples come out so it doesn't lay flat against the wall and the staples stay 2 or 3 mm out. It means that when you remove them you don't have to dig them out, just quickly lever them with a tool.

Someone gave me that tip in my second job! I have a penny taped at the end of the stapler!
