Paying wages (charity run group)

Recommended Posts

We currently pay staff by cheque. Just wondering how everyone else pays their staff? Not sure why it's not done electronically or is this because it's charity and needs two signatures?

we pay by bank transfer...lots of security measures you can put in place if you speak to your bank then they should tell you how. Usually cheaper now too as often you need to pay for cheques. We still have a cheque book system that runs for irregular payments

We are charity run and also pay by bank transfer, our local bank constantly told us we couldn't have a card or online banking as we had 2 signatures for cheques....they were wrong, we did have to complete a fair bit of paperwork ...but no more than the hassle of changing committee signatures after an AGM :-/ it was more of a problem that a committee member who had her personal accounts with same bank had them all linked to the nursery account so when I logged in I could have accessed them, this took ages to sort as the bank couldn't see what the problem was and was the norm apparently for group/association accounts :-O

We pay by bank transfer, apart from the time it still takes for cheques to clear, for so many of us now (myself included) paying in cheques is such hassle with no branch near us.

Surely payslips etc are paper trail enough?

Yes it's a pain isn't it, we are a 22 mile round trip from the bank. Can I ask who you bank with we are with Santander. I also find it a pain having to buy things then reimburse myself, would be so much easier if we could have a way of using a card with the account.

We also bank with Santander. We have a debit card (though that has serious limits and had to be registered to one person) They also now offer a low cost card machine (£99 ish)

I'm trying to find a new bank.......................one that hasn't/isn't investing in Fracking ( barclays and santander both do, so they're out). Any suggestions?

I think the Co-op used to call themselves the Ethical bank, not sure whether they support fracking though and thanks for that, we're considering changing banks but now I know that about Barclays we'll put more speed on it. :1b

We pay by standing order for basic wage (12 equal monthly payments) all rest by cheque - we pay a termly amount for key person work plus any training, meetings etc. Use HSBC - local branch very helpful.

We are charity, we use unity banking, currently have a 'charged card' this is where I have a bank card but two signatories have to authorise the payment to charge up my card. This then gives me a balance on my card and I request top ups as needed. This card company however are withdrawing from working with unity (alto card) so we are in talks of where to go next.

We also use Unity Trust Bank - a specialist bank for charities (they do not invest in fracking) we pay our wages by BACS transfer - in fact we pay everything by BACS transfer. The records when doing everything electronically are actually much more reliable and safer than paper audit trail. Doing everything electronically saves time and money and space for storing paper. We also use ALTO cards and are swapping over to Unity Multipay card when ALTO finishes in August.

Thankyou GFCCCC this is really useful info, I will give this to our Treasurer. Another of my issues is the fact that I buy snack, small resources from my own pocket and claim back. We have looked for a card we can be preloaded.
