Odd request! Looking for video clips of 'bad practice'

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help? We have decided to our horror, that we are slipping back into servicing and supervising children rather than interacting with them. Does anyone know of any video footage that shows this kind of bad practice, so that we can watch it without it getting personal to us and then see how ineffective it is, so we can then compare it to some good footage which we can find easily.

I know it's not usual to watch bad practice!, but I think this curved ball approach may help us atm.

Thanks if you can help.

Hi Wyngarth, I'm sure your not alone in the 'servicing and supervising' - sometimes we all go through periods where teaching and positive interaction takes second place to the care and health and safety aspect - especially when you have lots of children that need you to have 'eyes in the back of your head'!

I don't know of any video clips - hopefully someone on here will come along soon with some suggestions - however the Peer on Peer observations might help you all look at best practice - as long as you all are ready to be constructively observed!!!

This week I have an example of s and s - a practitioner was 'busy' at snack (not really busy) when a child said 'look at my picture' response was 'oh, lovely, well done'! - said child left with blank look on face! - obviously 'better' practise would have been to have responded by saying 'oh, tell me about your picture'!

We are often sidetracked by other things but using peer on peer does make us reflect on how we could have done things better!!

At least you have noticed - thats the first step to 'best practice' : )

I've got an old DVD (2007) from DFES days, from the Primary National Strategy, called "Questioning Everyday Practice" - not necessarily bad practice, but it says on the back "intended to provoke discussion about ways to build on everyday practice in order to achieve more effective practice". It was produced for trainers working in the early years.

The National Archive gives a few details but I guess it's not something that you could order - have you checked to see if there is anything on youtube - there are some great clips of good practice, I know!

It might be worth asking to see if any of your local schools have a copy?

We made our own......we had an issue with staff involvement in outdoor play. So we filmed a short session outside with two senior practitioners. One was showing involvement in every way possible and one was just standing 'supervising'. Each practitioner changed roles half way through the video. The video showed how the practitioner who was involved was like a magnet for the children and not one child approached the other practitioner. It was a very worthwhile exercise for us and we have kept the video for times when a reminder is needed.
