Electricity

Every year, when our electricity contract is nearing its end, I get lots of calls. They say they are calling about our current electricity account but in reality they are brokers, trying to get me to sign up to different suppliers. They are incredibly deceitful, using very carefully chosen words so that you think they are from your current supplier. They talk very quickly in a way that makes it sound like you have already agreed to things and that they are just verifying everything.

It sounds silly, but I find this very stressful. I feel misled and duped. It makes me feel foolish and unable to manage what should be a simple procedure. It is so time consuming and difficult, I just stay with my current supplier which is probably not the best deal. We are full daycare and only have electricty, no gas. Our electricity bill is enormous!

Does anyone else experience this? How do you deal with it? Does anyone know of a supplier that works honestly and ethically? I have searched online, but only come up with energy companies that supply ethically sourced energy - not really what I'm looking for.

Any advice welcome!

Our electricity is included with our hall hire fees but I would suggest getting in contact with energy helpline as they are unbiased and will find you the best deal based on your consumption , they then call me towards the end of my contract and find the best tariff for the following year , this is what I do at home , they then do all the transfer of suppliers etc , easy and stress free .

This has happened from us from time to time. I know exactly what you mean. In reality one did actually try to take over our supply but the current supplier stopped it as we were still under contract to them. I have stopped entering into a conversation with them and just stick to the current broker.

I get these calls. when they say they are calling from Southern Electricity or whoever I ask them to confirm that they are calling from that particular supplier and not from some other agency. At this point they start to fluff usually saying they are calling on behalf of.. or are agents for. I tell them I am not interested.

The other action I have used is to tell them my landlord deals with utilities.(Which actually they do, but I make a contribution).

Or you could try "I'm in the middle of something right now, could you email me the info" then you can read at your convenience. Any pushy seller who tries to say they cannot do this are therefore not worth listening too. Hang up.

Stargrower the only other advice is to say to not talk to anyone. You can call around or surf the internet when you want to change suppliers. So really you do not have to listen to them.

Please do not feel foolish. It is in our "blood" to listen when people talk that is why we are so good at this job.

In terms of who is offering the best deal...

Well come on Forumers who pays for electricity and what deals have you got?

Must admit our Treasurer sorts ours out. I think it did get a bit muddled a couple of years ago with one of these broker firms. Ended up paying lots on monthly DD. All sorted now. Can't remember who we are with at the moment.

we do use a broker and find it is really useful...this years deal is rather good! They can be a bit annoying but since we have used them for the last three years then they're getting better!...I think ours are 'make it cheaper'....we do gas/electricity and mobile through them. The pay off for listening to them is a good price I guess!

I am with Npower, was 3 year contract.....new yearly one with them...only 10p unit (less than before) But I also get calls from 'them' saying about new contract...illegal really as they say they are Npower, but I am also not happy about talking when children to watch,so ask them to email details ...but they never do because then you would find out who they really are !......also installed solar panels last year when feeling flush, as we are south facing....best thing I ever did...since u only use power during daylight hours...its a win win situation....free hot water, free heat AND payments back each quarter for the extra power generated that u dont use....

Do you mind me asking how much your solar panels cost to install? Our electricity bill is so enormous, it would definitely be worth thinking about, although we are on the ground floor of a two storey building. We are on good term with the chap who works upstairs so might be able to share the costs/benefits.

HI all company was Evo energy, very easy to order.... but if I recommend you I can get a payment I think...but we have 7 large panels on our single storey building cost about £6000 18months ago...seems a lot

but if you have electric heating (as I have ) and the sky is not necessarily sunny.....you could get free heat.

I have also installed sensory taps (or magic taps as the children call them )...as i was fed up with going into bathroom and turning off running taps.....only about £100 each tap...might be cheaper now as big push to save energy.Good luck with your enquiries,....can give you our mans name if you decide to take further....we had 3 quotes....one very pushy and quoted us £15000....guess who we went with...very efficient....
