Hi all,

Quick question. Does anyone know if all staff have to be level 3 qualified if they are to be a keyperson? Can they be training towards a level 3. We have one staff member who is training towards a level 3 and one member of staff who is waiting until next year to train due to other commitments.(Both would like to be keypeople) Advice very welcome, thank you in advance.x

i would say they need experience and knowledge of the eyfs.

think it also depends on whether you feel they are competent to be a key person? we have a level 2 who is a key person but only to 3 children as she will be undertaking her level 3 in september - she attended training - 1 -introduction to the eyfs,2- introduction to learning stories and 3 - observation, assessment and planning which were a good base for her.

we also gave her an experienced member of staff as a mentor to who she could go to for advice etc.,

think it is good for staff to have a key child if possible as can start to have idea of the cycle of observation, assessment and planning

I would say that as long as the member of staff is experienced, understands planning observation and assessment, has a sound knowledge and understanding of the eyfs, of how children learn and develop and is capable of working with and communicating with families then they should be fine. Like bkondie, we also provide a mentor for new key persons, and we have training materials such as videos and books for more support.

DEFINITION OF A KEY PERSON. The EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) highlights the job of the key person as a link sharing information with parents and carers about the child's life at home. The EYFS glossary defines a key person: 'the named member of staff with whom a child has more contact than other adults.
