Once upon a time

Recommended Posts

Hi all

We are planning a 'once upon a time' topic. Of course we will see where the children lead with the topic, but with only 5 children on roll for September I think we will need some ideas too :1b

I would like to bring in traditional tales as well as castles, knights, dragons etc.

Any ideas or things you have done before for this topic that work well?

Thanks in advance

You might be amazed how this takes you. We often start a turn taking game/ story with the phrase " once upon a time" it always makes me chuckle, but a great opportunity for the children to use their imagination.

Fairies, heroes, dragons, pixies, knights, magicians, real, make believe.

Great for exploring the beginning the middle and the end of a story.

If you have some particular traditional stories could you resource some props to enable the children to reenact the story.

So for instance Goldilocks with bowls, spoons, pretend beds, chairs of different sizes, make porridge, taste, or use for sensory play etc.

Not sure if that's the type of ideas you are looking for. Pinterest generally have some fab ideas too.:)

We like the book Shhh! The children love acting that out - bit like going on a bear hunt. I am also making a story cube - too expensive to by commercial ones. I have a lovely cube shaped box which I shall stuff, paint and then add cd plastic pockets to the outside so that we can change the pictures. We will invite the children to roll the die and then add that picture into their story.
