Ikea?

Has anyone used the ikea Trofast storage and successfully added castors! Thinking of using this as a cheaper, quicker way to set up but they would definately need castors and don't want to buy and find they dont fit! Thanks

You'd need to make sure bases aren't hollow, from picture it looks like it might have a plinth around bottom, with base higher, like a kitchen unit if you get what I mean, bit hard to tell though....they look good if it works.

Edit....Have a look at assembly instructions you'll see what I mean...you could maybe get around it by attaching another base to fix castors to or by getting the 2 sides sawn off so you don't need the front and back plinths, but that could be easier said than done depending on what it's made of. :/

Oo-ay I know its late- but thats commitment! - I have just found Adhesive Castors on Amazon!! Yay knew they'd come good. Might just be the answer?? Oh pleeease let that work - will check dimensions tomorrow and then hopefully off to Ikea...........will let you know if this works and is a good cheap, struggle-free way to set up! :)

Thanks for replies!

we have lots of trofast!!! some of the units do not have a plinth at the bottom (like the ones you put on walls for shelves but others do...if you go to the childrens section first you can see them all made up.....what might be a solution though is to turn them upside down! then you could have a handy storage area at the top too......not sure on the spacings for the drawers thought then.

i'll check at work when I go in to see you you!

We use these and have managed to add casters. We are pack away and move them every day. We have a lower set, one that is stepped down and two taller ones. But we are replacing taller ones because we have had two incidents of children pulling them over when the trays have stuck. I think ikea now recommend that you fix them to the wall. Also they don't have backs on them so really need to be against a wall. But I agree, much cheaper option than anything else.

I've just bought some trofast today and was wondering the same! How funny!

Only bought the low-level ones though, as you have to fasten to a wall if over 60cm in height, which we can't do in packaway. Shame, as the stepped-level ones were ideal!

I saw some castors advertised in Lidl, and worked out cheaper than ikea, but when I went they didn't have any :(

Yes me too, splashed out for 6 units. Now have the problem of which castors??? I too saw some in Lidl last week - wish Id bought them now too! I tend to dither for too long! : (

Also now have to make a very big space in my cupboard for them to fit in eek!

might go for the adhesive castors on Amazon as the thought of putting them all together now - is not a great one!

Would you have a link to the adhesive ones please? Not that I'm too lazy to try to find them myself, you understand... ;)

Some from Homebase but were quite expensive. Recently managed to get four sets from Lidl very cheap but haven't used them yet so might be rubbish. You do need quite big ones to make sure they stick out under the ikea units and strong ones if you are moving units around a lot. We have had to replace the castors overtime as they get a bit battered going down the one step we have and the ball bearings fall out. Wilkinson do did sell them a while ago or other diy places have them.

I recommend castors from screw fix and ensure you buy a pack with brakes on and a pack without so you are able to lock units in place, also check regarding weight and flooring , good castors are not cheap cheap but screwfix are very reasonable and will deliver the next day or go to local screwfix and collect, I am somewhat a castor master as we have used many for various things and just put another 16 on bowls boxes in our hall too.

Check when in Ikea for casters, they do a several different ones at good prices and they are sturdy too.. we had the Rill ones , while a bit more expensive than others they worked really well .Not sure self adhesive ones would be strong enough for the daily movement in a packaway setting, they are only a few screws- would probably also put blocks on the corners for them .

My Ikea Trofast update....

Thanks to all for your diy knowledge and those who are 'castor master' pros......

Well after a last minute panic I ended up in Wilkos - going for the 'cheapish' option.......24 castors with brakes + screws + screws that replaced the screws that were'nt long enough + no nails x 2 to fix blocks...... plus additional staff wages x 2, meant this was not the cheap option and I could probably have bought Community Playthings!!! Ha ha sob sob....

Anyway we managed to empty cupboard, build 6 units, fix castors, fill tubs, put into cupboard -( whew! they fitted) sort the wheat from the chaff, put it all back in.....all in 6 hours!

So tomorrow comes the day of truth....they look fantastic.....but will all the contents end up all over the floor - you bet!!

Sounds like you have had more luck than me! My dad and I spent yesterday morning attaching wood and then castors to the underside of my trofast (including a dash to find the nearest B&Q for extra screws) - only for it to fall off once we turned it right way up! Gah! 'No More Nails' my backside!

So, we quickly re-glued, turned it over, filled it with the tubs full of bricks etc and are hoping the added weight has helped it stick. I will find out on Thursday. Pray for me...

Well good day! wheels stayed on! Set up in half the time! Children especially enjoyed the draws with the utensils and pans - witnessed some lovely cooking play today.....so onwards and upwards!

HiApreschool - hope yours will be succesful too! Thats what I hoped with the not-so-no-nails - as we have no steps or ramps the weight will help it bond!
