Reading and letters and sounds phases

Recommended Posts

not a document, sorry, but we work with our preschools so that they focus on phase 1 and we pick up at phase 2, then work our way through to the beginning of phase 5 with our most able children, secure phase 3 and working within phase 4 with most children by the end of the Summer term when they are working within ELG's.

Just a rough guide. We are about to have some LA led traing about phonics with our preschool so will pass on anything more specific.

It doesn't really -

Phase 1 is nursery (but runs thorugh all phases too)

Phase 2 and 3 is usually reception, with secure phase 3 being a good match for the reading and writing phonics skills at ELGs

Phase 4 is a bridging phase with no new teaching, just extending from CVC words from Reception into Yr1

Secure phase 5 is end of Yr1expectation

Secure phase 6 is end of Yr2 expectation
