CL: Understanding - expectations

'Able to follow a story without pictures or props'

 

What would you expect to see when assessing this statement?

Would you want the child to re-tell the story or would you expect the child to answer questions?

Quite often I just make up a very short story and tell it - no pictures or storytelling props -as part of story time. Usually it will be a synopsis of the story I'm going to share later during story time, but it is interesting to see how much children can take in when they have just a voice to focus on, and I expect them to be able to answer questions or join in a discussion.

Generally I use the 'once upon a time, then, after that and finally' structure as that something we use extensively to support our children who are in the early stages of learning English.

as above. i don't feel they need to be able to retell it. just answer questions and join in discussion about it. it's hard for nursery children unless they are very able ...... most of ours need pictures/props/puppet. it could be a story CD? without the book of course!

As a 40-60 month statement for understanding i want them to show me a high level of understanding what they are hearing. So at least answering Blank level 3 or 4 questions....so expressing ideas about things they cannot see and maybe do not have the 'answers' for (why do you think he did that ? or what do you think happened next? kind of thing!)

Same as everyone else, but remember that storytelling does not have to be make-believe or in the stereotypical story sense.

Last week, I had a little boy asking me what I had done that day and ended up telling him every movement I'd made from waking up to sitting with him. He constantly asked appropriate questions and answered any that I posed. I have full confidence in him being able to meet the criteria for that stage of development, even though the evidence isn't quite what you might expect
