CRB/DBS

Could someone tell me if existing staff need to have DBS done if they still have the traditional CRB. I asked my early years advisor who didn't think I needed to update. I also contacted Ofsted who said they are not able to advise. Bit worried we will be pulled up on this.

Thanks

we have just updated ours - chair wanted this done as when sign up for the update you can check all the time that there have been no changes to suitability of staff which is great but on down side it costs £52 per staff member and update is £`13 per year so would say its whether you can afford it.

we recently had ofsted (before we did dbs)and as long as we could show a list of crb numbers, date obtained and who with she was absolutely fine with it.

It's only best practice to get renewed. My committee want me to renew staff but I haven't done yet as I don't see the point until I can renew mine and I haven't found out how yet. I may be able to get my chair an account with capita but I need to get her ey2 through first. Although when I email them the didn't understand my email and asked me to ring customer services.

We have an account with Capita which I have used for new staff. We made it part of their acceptance of the job that they had to sign up to the update service or they would be responsible for renewing DBS at the end of the year. We are going to renew existing staff on a rolling program. I did find out that we have to set up a second person to countersign and check ID's in order to be able to do mine as the manager, so have put down my deputy. We had Ofsted inspection in October and she checked DBS/CRB details and asked to see staff declaration details as evidence of continueing staff suitability (think this is also on another thread) as no-one at that point had a DBS. Another point to think of is who will be responsible for paying for the update service - the setting or the member of staff???????

Diesel As manager Ofsted check you through their contracted dbs company not an independant company registered with by yourselves, once you have been checked you do not need to redo yours aslong as you have no gaps in being a manager. Ofsted only check committee members, registered person and manager, I swapped from running my own to employeed by a company but as I had no gaps in practicing I didn't even have to redo mine. Mine is from 2004 and I know others who's were pre that x :)

I am not 100% certain but I dont think that Ofsted carry out Manager's checks anymore? Or is it just staff? Its that old age creeping up again. Could someone else shed any light on this? They do have to be informed of any changes in Manager.

i haven't had mine done yet as i am the only person able to check the info on the dbs site - however my development worker has said that the chair as nominated person can enrol then she can check my info.

the thing ofsted are hot on if you look at other settings ofsted is that committee changes have been notified and they have ey2s etc.,

at the moment our committee say they will pay for dbs and update but who knows in the future - although i guess you can cancel this if needed.

our inspector just wanted to see our crb list showing number, date of crb and who registered with - this was for both staff and committee - we have this on inside of locked cupboard so easily available. she also checked that we do update our staff suitability each year (although now my development worker now says should be each term!!!)

ever changing what one person says and wants!!

but if I don't need mine done again as I haven't had an gaps in my employed why do the staff need theirs done again? (and then register with the update service - is the update service for their current employment or any future employment and therefore not at the setting expense?)

When Ofsted check you/committee members its a case that this is different from us checking staff, Ofsted has a 'thing' with the police and social that if anything occurs it flags up on their systems where as staff dbs/crbs are only as good as the day the check was passed which therefore means someone could do something week after and you would not know unless they disclosed or you did a re check which good practice is/was 3 years. The update service is for current and future jobs, so if you choose to you could check everyone's live status at 6 monthly or yearly intervals thus ensuring excellent practice, if the member of staff moves to another job in the same area so nursery nurse to nursery nurse then the next employer would not pay for a new check but just check using the update service. This is where I find the problems arise who's responsibility therefore is it to pay for update service? If the employer pays when the member moves on they won't have access to the update service so would it be best for the employee to pay the 13 pound therefore they then own the rights to the Dbs and can use it in other areas such as Saturday work at a crèche.

We are still not decided on who's going to pay for what yet. x

In essence Ofsted are responsible for checking you so they do what they like lol, but you are responsible for checking staff so they make us jump through hoops (and back again) ?

Ofsted do the checks for the committee but it is then the committees responsibility to employ a suitable manager ensuring that all the dbs checks and references are done. This has been the case for over a year as this happened to me when we set up a new preschool. Been through an inspection too.

Thankyou Marley. I thought I had seen this somewhere (not sure where) and that committees are also responsible for ensuring that managers who were originally checked by Ofsted, continue to be suitable ie. no convictions etc, and this is no longer carried out by Ofsted.

And as i am not the nominated person they wont accept from me over the phone and the old nominated person has retired.

I have applyed to be nominated person, which they carry out my interview when they do our next inspection

Committee complete there DBS checks online I believe it through Capita they then have to compete an EY2 firm online which ties your DBS check,in with the setting. Not sure about the EY3 but OFSTED did send one through to us with pAperwork so think they're still valid.

It is best practice to ensure you update staff regarding any convictions, changes etc but you don't have to renew just trust your staff are telling you the truth.

Although I manage a setting as my DBS is not on update , I have been required by LA to apply as I am getting a chaperone licence ! Ironic
