I was told that staff can't be on sight unless DBS through although to be fair we have parent helpers who are on sight with supervision so what the difference is I do not know. You may also have a problem with dealing with information about children, etc... so I am told is all to do with information safety linked to children. I recently had to ask a staff memember (who was new) to not come in until it was completed :-(

I've also been led to believe this too - my advisor also said she wasn't sure these days how Ofsted look on parent helpers being in the setting, some might be ok and others not!

But then if people are getting actions about more parental involvement - who knows!

just read an Ofsted report for a local setting that an inspector described something as 'exceptional' whereas we do exactly the same and my inspector just said 'oh ok' and didn't even feel the need to write about it

don't know if others are feeling the same but the inconsistencies seem to be getting more and more

I thought I had read somewhere it changed to not working until DBBs had come back, no supervision allowed. It could just be part of our local safeguarding thing though I'm now going to rack my brain to remember.

I do stick to this though and any new employee is told this, parent helpers i also do DBS checks for.

Ofsted asked for parent helper DBS numbers when we Had our inspection, the parent helper was not left unsupervised at any point either and only volunteered one session per week.

3.11. Providers must tell staff that they are expected to disclose any convictions, cautions, court orders, reprimands and warnings that may affect their suitability to work with children (whether received before or during their employment at the setting). Providers must not allow people whose suitability has not been checked, including through a criminal records check, to have unsupervised contact with children being cared for.

This is taken from the ofsted guidance on dbs doc sept14

However, for other staff, where Ofsted does not decide on suitability, it may be possible in some circumstances for staff to start work before their DBS check is complete, subject to the following rules:

■ In exceptional circumstances, when to wait for the DBS check might disrupt the care of children, staff may start work before a DBS check is complete.

■ These rare situations may only happen when the DBS check has been applied for – if an application has not been made, the person may not start work.

■ Any unchecked person must never be left unsupervised with children, and all children must always be within sight and hearing of a checked person.

■ The employer (where there is one) must show Ofsted that there are robust recruitment and employment practices in place, including details of a DBS check on staff members.
