Staff problems?

i know what you mean - have had staff meeting today - spoke about lots of things - most staff very eager to input ideas etc but the rest sit there and i know they will be the ones moaning tomorrow/ in the future when any ideas/changes come in.

why don't they input their views / ideas instead of saying nothing then moaning about the ideas of others? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr x

Yep, me too.

Gave everyone advance warning this evening that I expect tomorrow's lunchtime meeting to be brief because they will have thought about the agenda in advance, and so will come prepared!

I love an optimist!!

You never know...let us know if it worked! :D

Advance notice worked pretty well - we always have an agenda given in advance and everyone has the half-term's planning overview so there should never be too many surprises, and I always expect people to come with ideas to contribute. We have moved a long way from the days when everyone sat and then moaned afterwards.

This time I just saw each person individually and explained that I expected them to be prepared - no different from normal except that it was a personal reminder rather than a general reminder.

Meeting wasn't any quicker though, just found more to talk over!

i have to say I think motivation is truly the real issue here. Unfortunately in the modern world to provide excellence in early years requires staff with a real vocation, a real desire to ensure that the children are given the very best experiences and staff who have a self drive for improvement, who don't just want to get through the day, but want every day to be great. Hard to find given the wages we offer....I think they either have "it" or they don't.

I'm on a drive to now improve staff motivation, team building, knowledge base, and to try and dispel there negativity they take so much effort putting out there , I swear if I get one more excuse I will explode. I want passion enjoyment and motivation to much to ask for?

I have a similar issue but it also comes with knowledge and understanding of the industry changes. I have 2 experienced room leaders but they "don't get" the change happening within Ofsted and the Early Years in general - they don't get the characteristics of effective learning one overstructures and the other one under structures.. aaaahhh!

I have to agree. We have new management and I was asked last week if I know why I have such a rapport with children, parents and other staff. I responded this is not my job it is my vocation! I do my job for the rewards of seeing those small milestones. I work/support children with additional needs within a nursery setting. Last week after months of repetitive activities one child used their index finger to press a button. I had tears streaming down my face because I knew how much work, repetitiveness and endurance had gone in from the child. That to me was worth more than anything I could earn. The parents delight and hugs were worth more than my wages.

Sometimes in the modern world people think childcare is an easy option!

This isn't my job; its my passion. It's a running joke at my current nursery that I don't switch off when I'm on holiday as I'm always reading something or researching something.

And I've had moments of tears. When my deaf key child tried to say my name for the first time (it had taken her almost 2 years to get to that point) and when my other key child with additional needs sang a song for the first time (again, almost 2 years). They make my job worth doing.

.

It infuriates me that staff have no interest in researching what is happening in early years, ( in their job) I send them links, ask them to read certain Ofsted reports in our area ( we get the same few inspectors in our area so can work out what they're remit is), I put mags in staff room telling them to help themselves, even saying to specific staff "there's an interesting article on" but still they sit there piling up untouched gggrrrrrrr

  • 3 weeks later...

In what other role can practitioners immerse themselves totally for years just because they want to do the best they can for the client(children). Taking work home, putting in more than 12 hours a day, and being happy with a salary that for more than 50% of the workforce will be less than the proposed new Working Wage - no one could say dedication didn't come in their somewhere.

But .... ah well the magic of Early Years has something special!

I asked someone to read the U5C that comes to my house every month, she said 'I dont need to, you'll read it and tell us if theres anything important in it'

We're having a staff/committee meeting tomorrow, 1 or 2 members of staff need reminding of their role and I have plans to help them out

Long term plans so everyone knows whats what and nobody can say they didnt know or change things with no notice to everyone else.

Medium term plans so parents, childminders can see whats what and contribute, thereby making staff engage and not merely rule.

I could go on but I'm revelling in the anticipation of grumps ;)
