What experience did you have when you became one? (or what experience does your FSL have?)

six years in playgroup, KS 1 teacher in three different schools, including Year R in all of them, ten years teaching altogether (sounds like I moved around a lot, but husband's job meant we moved around the country), then KS1 teacher in current school before settling in year R. Became Year Group leader after three years in Year R.

What are the extra responsibilities on top of your daily teaching role?

Year group planning - long, medium and short term, continuous provision and outside provision - head up meetings and type up planning documents; ensuring progression and continuity with pre-schools and KS1

Organising support staff - who works where at the beginning of the year, and then ensuring all classes are properly staffed each day, monitoring sickness and having 'return to work' discussions, support staff call me if they are unable to came to work

supervision for support staff and appraisal for teachers

Year group data analysis half-termly, and subsequent 1:1 meetings with teachers to discuss individual children's progress

SLT member

working with other schools to share good practice, keeping myself and all staff up-to-date with developments

organising which child goes into which class on admission, organising home visits, talking with new parents and feeder preschools

holding workshops for maths, reading and phonics for parents

ensuring safety of outside learning area

researching and ordering equipment, shopping for consumables

deciding what colour paint the walls are going to be when they are painted in the Summe

keeping everyone positive and morale high

fighting the EYFS corner and not allowing it to be swamped by the phonics check

What makes a special Foundation Stage Leader?

knowing the strengths of each staff member and making sure they can succeed, being able to deal with the difficult bits and keep smiling, an appreciation of what it means to be four years old, a clear vision of what children need to learn and a sense of reality and fun

Can I ask why you are asking?
