Improving PSED scores

Hi all,

 

Just wondered if anyone had any words of wisdom... I am in a 1 form entry school and have been asked to consider why the PSED scores are lower than other areas of learning in the EYFSP. The children tend to leave reception with better than average reading, writing and maths but their PSED scores bring down their overall GLD. I do circle times, stories (sometimes with puppets) and talk discreetly about how to be a good friend. Also praise good PSED within class time.

 

I am thinking it is probably just the children in those specific years that haven't quite made the ELG but wondered if there was anything else I could do to raise the scores in this area??

 

All suggestions gratefully received...

Hi Emcat, as sooty99 said, I would look at which aspects are not achieving the 'expected' and go from there.

It isnt typical for the PSED to fall short of the literacy, often the writing is lower than any of the others. One thing you might do, if you haven't already is look at how you decide whether or not children have ,met the 'expected' . When you are alone in a year group, it can be hard as there is noone to share your thinking with..do you have neighboring schools you can meet with to discuss what is typical of the ELGs? Is it possible that you are being too harsh, or just not seeing the behaviours that would lead you to give the expected?

II think once you have unpicked all that, you will be clearer about where the gaps are (especially if this has been year on year pattern), and you can think forward as to what you might do.

Indeed, as Mundia says, often it is not seeing the ELGs in the world of 5 yr olds - teachers do sometimes over complicate the expectations. Were you moderated last year?? Linking up with another school in your cluster or locality is highly recommended.

If they have done well in people and communities/UTW for example I would expect to see this evidence supporting aspects of PSED, also speaking evidence supports a lot of PSED too. Does the overall pattern of attainment make sense?

Also I think that PSED teaching is more about the way adults demonstrate the expected behaviours and enable them through the environment and approaches used to learning. Reviewing how adults will promote the PSED behaviours is a good next step.
