sizzy007 Posted October 27, 2014 Share Posted October 27, 2014 Hi Everyone! We are doing a whole school cross curricular topic on WW1 for 4 weeks when we go back after half term.! I'm struggling to find suitable books/stories and activities to do with 4 and 5 year olds apart from the obvious poppy making. Help, any suggestions gratefully received! I've never taught in reception, and to be honest I'm not sure how I would tackle WW1 with four year olds! However, I'm sure our lovely members will have lots of support to offer - perhaps they're all out enjoying half term! Learning why people in their community wear a poppy could be linked into the educational programme for UTW At a push you could examine the notion of 100 - it's a big number and represents a long time ago. Collect or make or draw 100 objects over the 4 weeks. that they would remember an event or someone by? Make a display of "100 ways to remember" There's also plenty of picture books around I expect that will present the idea of WW1 You could also explore what it is like when someone goes away - what have they experienced like that, what did they do... phone and skype etc. What they would do with no technology?? Problem solve ways to get a message. From this you could introduce the idea of animals in wartime using them as messengers. Look up some of the animals who won it for WW1.
