Updated info on DBS checks from Ofsted

But if someone is on maternity leave they are technically still employed by you, arent they? Therefore they surely dont need to be checked again. They would just 'declare' themselves with no changes. If that's the case I cannot see what on earth is the benefit of all these changes. We may as well have just kept to our original CRB's.

Perhaps it has to do with continuing suitability - that another childcare employer would have overseen that. If the applicant or returning employee has been away from work with children for any reason (travelling, studying, sick leave, maternity leave, other kinds of word) it may be assumed that this can not be guaranteed?

I thought I could call Ofsted about clarification of one of their documents, but was told that it's up to me to have the policies I choose. I just don't understand the information on page 8...

I don't know if it's OK not to require a former employee who is returning (not on update service) or an applicant with a DBS check which is older than 12 months (on update service) not to apply for a new DBS check if I judge this not being necessary.

I continue monologuing...

I rang Ofsted again. They told me to call to LA. The LA told me to call the DBS people at the Home Office. They told me to call Ofsted!

I'm clear about the 3 months - I will ask the former employee what they've been up to whilst away and record this to show an inspector.

Regarding the 12 months - I'm under the impression that it's best to ask a potential new employee, who applied for a DBS check and registered with the update service more than 12 months earlier, to apply for a new DBS check, and again pay the £65 or whatever it is.
