I think I'm at that slightly hysterical stage! xD:DxD

Join the club!

Wow - what a first week - would someone please tell the parents of 'my' children to put them to bed early - some shattered little things - especially today.......

We have had some bright moments - in between the crying, pushing, throwing episodes

Wanders off muttering "I'm getting to old for this"

Had a good week, just one little girl who was trying my patience this morning, totally agree about the putting them to bed earlier comment!! Going to do next weeks planning now and then that's it for the weekend. (except need to pick more blackberries to make jam with them next week and blackberries for them to squash and paint with oh and write the newsletter as well) Then the weekend will start!! Hope you all have a good rest ready for week number two and whatever it may bring!!! :o:D

Well the hysteria continued today... First thing this morning - 4 crying/needing cuddles and 1 who was howling - head down on floor, bottom in air, wouldn't let himself be comforted. Only me in the classroom and although I can handle a lot I sent a note to the office saying "I could do with a hand!" TA appeared saying "I thought it might be like this in here this morning" (cue me smiling through gritted teeth and thinking 'why didn't you come in to help and pre-empt it then!' Next thing I know head appears to see how things are going and reappeared a couple of times during the morning. Finally got to talk to him at lunch and it turned out that 3 different parents had gone out and said that I was having a hard time and could they go back in to help (which was very sweet). Lunchtime was the least weepy and calmest it's been all week and this afternoon was going pretty well until we discovered the child who hadn't quite made it to the toilet on time and left small 'clues' dotted around! Cue TA and school secretary cleaning up child, me searching our path to check they were clean and the head supervising my class!

Head came in again at home time saying "I know it's not a good time but you don't have any icepacks in here do you?" I told him it was the one thing that hadn't happened to me this week!

Week 1 - all in all not too bad xDxD

I x a bit weepy but consolable

1 x trying to nibble a member of staff - watch with beady eyes next week

Few x "Oh my goodness I have been pandered to and loved and treasured and am my parents one and only" for whom it has been a bit of a wake up call that they are not the one and only

1 x comes in sooooo v. excited like someone has wound him up for the day and let him off his lead

Several x Parents a bit put out that they have effectively been patted on their heads by their children and dismissed

1 x Keep an eye on as looking like some SEN involvement will be needed

2 x new staff who I'm not sure quite know what has hit them after returning to work having had a couple of years off

Next week however we start filtering in the younger children so hopefully this weekend can re-charge batteries myself ;)

I x door opening whippet - have to watch that one!

1 x Shirley Temple -

2 x sad but not inconsolable

Not to bad really, I think we may have got of light this year :1b

Not sure about other preschools, but with us our years tend to fluctuate - as in the amount leaving for school. This year we only lost 18 to school, so therefore a relatively small intake of newbies now, - last year it was very high.

not doing too bad so far....but if i have another child with sen needs appear i may have a complete melt down. How many of you ask about sen needs before entry? and how do you do this without appearing you are being discriminatory?

Also i know we have had many conversation recently about supporting home language but i had a little boy turn up this week russian....NO english at all (fab Russian!) but our siblings are at english schools and the family have lived here for 6 years ...Mum and Dad speak perfect english...why oh why would you not have taught your 3 year old at least a few words...poor chap...i have learnt a bit more russian this week though so i suppose that's a bonus

Very very similar, we lost 16 to school and have not taken in nearly enough yet to cover, but, could have 2 more starters next week if we are lucky. We have a "no" to everything, a flitter - gone before you know it, and definitely one for SALT referral, but we will hold fire on that until half term, give her some proper time to settle in and see if anything changes. Crying is at an all time low, and in fact the worst was a returner - but he always howls when mum leaves and stops the moment she has gone m- but when newbies are a little uncertain I wish he wouldn't.

We ask after offer but before induction session, but have never, ever, had anyone admit a problem despite then finding I have an ASD candidiate in almost every intake......

On our registration form along with all the other million and one questions we seem to ask we have the lines

Do you consider your child to have a disability yes / no

Do you consider your child to have a special educational need yes / no

Underneath each question it says something like if you have answered yes, please give more information.

I have had parents answer yes and write whatever concern or identified need there is and then I have been able to make contact with the family before the child starts.

I'm sure someone might come along and say I can't ask questions like this!

Thanks all really helpful to know what others do. Our registration form only comes back on entry and at present the application to join doesn't have anything other than basics on it. Most children in our area have not had HV checks (!!!!) despite the fact we have two childrens centres very close to us! Even then the info i get seems to be sketchy at best. Had a child this week whose Mum expressed concerns but on her 2 yr check from previous setting stated her speech was clear at 2 (she was hardly talking at this age!!!!) All but 2 of my new starters have got an 'issue' of some sort (only 10 started so far...staggered start for us!...i have children starting up until october half term) ...others all have sen (most not diagnosed of course) need salt or have eal and are struggling....think it's going to be a challenging year group by the sound of things for all of us....just as well we have each other :1b

Fm - our registration forms + all other paperwork is posted out to parents - they complete it and bring it in when children have a 'taster/visit' (end of term before entry in the next term) - this gives me an opportunity to go through the info with parents and discuss any concerns face to face and at the same time agree 'settling in' procedure.......

I have had one parent try to 'swerve' the visit - should have come in at the end of July - consequently I have insisted she makes the visit as planned but it will be tomorrow - think she assumed he would just be able to start last Monday with others - well that would be a 'no' then - there is a good reason behind these 'arrangements' and as far as I'm concerned they are not up for 'negotiation'.....

We have 20 new children. We had a few tears from some of the children for a short time but as we are coming into our 3rd week most have settled. One parent phoned me on Wednesday to say that her child wouldn't get out of the car. His nan brought him the next time and she walked the short distance to us stayed with him sat in adjoining room and he was fine. Another parent wrote on Facebook my child is so upset wher he goes to ?????? Bearing in mind that she forgot to collect him at the correct time the day before.. I repeatedly have told her he is fine after a few minutes. Luckily one of the staff saw her comment and I was able to show her pihotos of her child playing to reassure her. We have 4 new children children starting this will they will be fine not sure about the parents though.

Our new bunch are settling in nearly all just turned 2yrs a lot of them funded. So far there is a distinct lack of language skills but the 2 who really bother me are twin sisters hello, bye, mummy are the sum total of understood words they call all of us mummy. They have a unique communication system with each other and during play mainly animalistic noises yesterday I truly thought we had 2 cats about to fight outside in the play area. Shall be observing more all I can say is thank goodness for ECAT training.

Mine are, on the whole, calming down a little. I have one who is going to be hard work but has a real sweet warmth to him - he's like a (very) big 2 year old in terms of his comprehension and ability to communicate. This afternoon I gave him a spot to sit on to help identify where he should be (and stay!) during carpet time things. I had to smile when, at home time, he got up off it turned and said "Bye bye my spot" before going to line up!
